The Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) today demanded that the Foreign Affairs and European Integration Ministry (MAEIE) undertakes measures to condemn actions of political harassment on behalf of Russia against Moldovan officials.
According to the PDM press service, the demand was made given that, so far, Russia has failed to answer an earlier demarche by the government and parliament on abuses committed against more Moldovan officials.
Also, the Democrats’ press service said that PDM would inform the international institutions about the new abuses committed by Russia against political, governmental officials and lawmakers from Moldova.
A press release submitted reads that PDM expresses disapproval of the actions of political harassment and persecution to which representatives of the Democrats and cabinet and parliament officials are subjected in continuation.
“Tens of prosecution or criminal files against political and governmental officials from Moldova have been opened in the last year. A quite large number of demands on behalf of institutions from Russia, described as actions of political harassment and persecution against Moldovan officials, were rejected by Interpol and other international institutions. These abuses made by several institutions from Russia have at their basis geopolitical reasons, of intimidation, blackmail and harassment of Moldovan officials,” the press release also reads.
The source noted that “another motivation behind these files fabricated in Russia consists in covering persons charged with offences on the territory of Moldova, people who carried out and carry out activities in the interest of Russian special services and against Moldova. The moment of launch of these political harassment actions coincided with the starting and advancement of Moldovan inquiry authorities in the investigation concerning the laundering of 22 billion dollars coming from Russia, through Moldovan banks,” the PDM press service said.
The Democrats’ reaction comes after a Russian webpage has recently published an article which reads that PDM leader Vlad Plahotniuc would be criminally prosecuted in Russia for committing more offences on grounds of ethnic, racial, political and ideological hatred. At the same time, the PDM spokesman, Vitalie Gamurari, said that “this information represents manipulations and attacks against the political activity of the PDM leader, aimed at his intimidation.”
