The development of relations between Moldova and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) was examined today at the meeting of Prime Minister, Pavel Filip, and NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg. The dialogue took place in Brussels within the frames of the Eastern Partnership Summit, the government’s communication and protocol department has reported.
“Today, it is my third visit to NATO Headquarters as Prime Minister of Moldova in less than a year, meaning a good cooperation relationship between Moldova and NATO, as well as our desire to learn from experience of its member states,” said Pavel Filip.
The Prime Minister reiterated Moldova’s interest to further strengthen political dialogue and practical cooperation with NATO within fields agreed in the Individual Action Plan of the Moldova – NATO Partnership for 2017 – 2019.
“Moldova, even if it is a neutral state by constitution, wants a very good collaboration with NATO because we want to have a developed army and be a state that can provide security. In this sense, I do not think there is a better way than to learn from NATO,” said PM.
Simultaneously, the Premier appreciated the support which Moldova’s institutions have benefited from NATO. However, it was highlighted the support provided under the Defence Capabilities Consolidation Initiative and the Interoperability Platform, as well as the substantial expertise and support provided through the Science and Peace Science Programme. In this context, Pavel Filip mentioned that the National Defence Strategy and the Action Plan for its implementation for 2017 – 2021 were elaborated and approved at government level. The Military Strategy is also being underway.
At his turn, NATO Secretary General reiterated respect for Moldova’s neutrality and firm support on behalf of the organisation for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova. Jens Stoltenberg noted that Moldova has been a valuable partner and reiterated the importance of implementing reforms, including modernising defence. “Only through reforms we can be resilient to external threats,” said NATO Secretary General.
At the same time, the official confirmed the willingness to provide Moldova with all necessary expertise and assistance. “It is good that Moldova wants to become not only a consumer, but also a regional security provider,” said Jens Stoltenberg.
The parties expressed their conviction that the inauguration of the NATO Liaison Office in Chisinau in early December of 2017 will further boost bilateral cooperation. Especially, bilateral collaboration will be developed in new areas such as cyber – threats, resilience and civil emergency preparedness. Also, the NATO Liaison Office will inform citizens about the benefits of cooperation with the North Atlantic Block.
In other range of ideas, Prime Minister reconfirmed Moldova’s determination to actively support efforts to promote peace and security in Europe, including through participation of the military contingent of Moldova to the NATO – led operation in Kosovo.
